The Kwena Basin Schools Project began in 2000 when students from the former Johannesburg College of Education (JCE) handed over a donation of literacy resources to farm schools in the Kwena Basin. A partnership was developed between the land owners of the Kwena Basin Conservancy, the Wits School of Education and the local community.

Twice annually since 2002, students from the Wits School of Education have spent their prescribed three week school experience sessions at the Kwena Basin Schools under the leadership of lecturers Dr Jean Place and Mr Grant Coltman. 

 Four schools currently benefit from the project, namely:

  • Klipspruit Combined School: a historical farm school, serving learners from Grade R to Grade 12; 
  • Umthombopholile: meaning “Fountain of healing or knowledge,”  - Primary School;
  • Phakama, a name derived from “Waking up,” or “Picking up.”  - Primary School; and
  • Enkeldoorn - Primary School.

From 2008, for a three year period, a corporate donor sponsored newly graduated educators to teach at the schools. With the imminent termination of this funding from 2012, the establishment of a formal fundraising body became imperative, thus the Kwena Basin Education Trust was formed.

Two graduate educators were appointed to Klipspruit Combined School in January 2012 with initial funding from the Kwena Basin Conservancy. Donations secured by the Kwena Basin Education Trust ensured that the senior phase Mathematics post was secured for a period of two consecutive years.

During 2014, the Teacher Development Programme (TDP) was implemented, focusing on training and upgrading the skills of local educators. This project is facilitated by Prof Louis Benjamin from Basic Concepts Unlimited, and is currently in its third year.

In 2015, two graduate teachers were employed at Umthombopholile in the Foundation and Early Childhood Development phases.  

In 2016, the Kwena Basin Education Trust appointed a teaching assistant, a former successful Matric learner from Klipspruit Combined School, to assist with the implementation and monitoring  of the TDP project.
